Yojimbo was such a good movie.\u00c2\u00a0 Toshiro Mifune is probably my favorite actor.\u00c2\u00a0 It seems to me, in my unschooled opinion, that some of the best face actors come from Japan.\u00c2\u00a0 They are great at expressing themselves through looks and through voice.\u00c2\u00a0 Subtitiles are almost a formality during certain scenes.\u00c2\u00a0 And Kurosawa, he takes some interesting shots.\u00c2\u00a0 I can’t quite figure out how to put my pictures in here, because I’m a Luddite and not quite willing to figure it out. I’ve uploaded some of Ben’s pictures, but can’t seem to get them up here.\u00c2\u00a0 I’ll ask him on Wednesday.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u00c2\u00a0More about Yojimbo.\u00c2\u00a0 As Mary-Carolyn says, it is hardboiled without really being a detective novel.\u00c2\u00a0 Compared to The Glass Key,<\/em>\u00c2\u00a0 there is no Janet, no Henrys at all.\u00c2\u00a0 Sanjuro kills everyone who dies- and kills almost everyone.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n I’ve seen\u00c2\u00a0A Fistfull of Dollars<\/em>\u00c2\u00a0 and really, Leone jacks it all from Kurosawa.\u00c2\u00a0 Only, Eastwood’s Man With No Name uses fire to break out of captivity, like Ned Beaumont.\u00c2\u00a0 So maybe Hammett influences them both beyond the obvious Kurosawa influence in Leone’s film.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n \u00c2\u00a0A word on the music in Yojimbo.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/em>Wasn’t it awesome?\u00c2\u00a0 Trumpets and thumpy drums.\u00c2\u00a0 Minimalist, yet effective.\u00c2\u00a0 Mr. Tarentino really steals everything he’s got, even the trumpets and drums.\u00c2\u00a0 Not to mention the samurai swords.\u00c2\u00a0 If you made Sanjuro a tall blonde woman, and made Yojimbo <\/em>into an exploitation film, you’d get something like Kill Bill <\/em>but far less violent.
