I’ve been thinking about our Truth vs. Subjectivitiy debate in class.\u00c2\u00a0 I think that the two need to be understood together, a synthesis rather than one or the other.\u00c2\u00a0 Maybe that means I’m for subjectivity, but I don’t think I am.\u00c2\u00a0 Rather, that truth is too big for people.\u00c2\u00a0 Like Emily Dickinson says in this poem:<\/p>\n

Tell all the Truth but tell it slant—
\nSuccess in Circuit lies
\nToo bright for our infirm Delight
\nThe Truth’s superb surprise
\nAs Lightening to the Children eased
\nWith explanation kind
\nThe Truth must dazzle gradually
\nOr every man be blind—<\/font><\/p>\n

Which isn’t exactly what I mean.\u00c2\u00a0 But it’s close.<\/p>\n

I don’t trust people who claim to know truth but are complacent, nor people who claim truth but are militant.\u00c2\u00a0 I guess I don’t trust many claims of truth.\u00c2\u00a0 Any claims of truth.\u00c2\u00a0 But listening to them, something begins to take shape that might be real.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00a0Like, we are trusting Errol Morris in this movie.\u00c2\u00a0 We only see two hours of carefully selected and sometimes staged footage.\u00c2\u00a0 But we trust Morris’ portrayal of the case.\u00c2\u00a0 What if Adams told him he had buried treasure, and if Morris got him released, he could have half of it?\u00c2\u00a0 Morris might be clever enough a manipulator of people’s words to make that happen.\u00c2\u00a0 After all, we didn’t see the court documents or evidence.\u00c2\u00a0 Just testimony made by people years after the fact.\u00c2\u00a0 We don’t even see Harris’ confession on video.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00a0But we do trust Morris.\u00c2\u00a0 Perhaps because we’re sheep and screen-dazed grazers of whatever is put before us.\u00c2\u00a0 Perhaps because we trust Dr. Campbell.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 I don’t really know why.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
