{"id":14,"date":"2007-03-02T10:20:38","date_gmt":"2007-03-02T17:20:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elsweb.org\/tyler\/2007\/03\/02\/14\/"},"modified":"2007-03-02T10:20:38","modified_gmt":"2007-03-02T17:20:38","slug":"14","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elsweb.org\/tyler\/2007\/03\/02\/14\/","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My theory of matching as the basic art of cinema (I don&#8217;t know a damn thing about the art of cinema):<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0So, to make a movie you need lots of people.\u00c2\u00a0 Hence, we watch credits for a really long time.\u00c2\u00a0 But to make cinema, you need lots of artists.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;m not into film enough to know the great costume designers or computer animators etc, and only have a superficial understanding of great actors, directors, producers.\u00c2\u00a0 But it seems to me, that\u00c2\u00a0a great movie will happen when either a bunch of artists work together or an artist coaxes the best out of a bunch of technicians.\u00c2\u00a0 We&#8217;ll concentrate on the bunch of artists.\u00c2\u00a0 We&#8217;ll need a writer\/screenwriter who doesn&#8217;t stink.\u00c2\u00a0 Maybe a few.\u00c2\u00a0 The words usually come first, I bet.\u00c2\u00a0 You need someone to shoot the movie in a meaningful way, an interesting way.\u00c2\u00a0 If you don&#8217;t have decent actors, it will be very hard to make a good movie, so we&#8217;ll say some good actors too.\u00c2\u00a0 For some music we&#8217;ll recruit a whole sub-bunch of artists, someone to write the score and people talented enough to do it justice with thier instruments.\u00c2\u00a0 I think it&#8217;s easy to forget that it takes talent not only to write\u00c2\u00a0a score, but to play it, too.\u00c2\u00a0 Then there&#8217;s all the details I don&#8217;t know about, lighting, makeup, costume, etc.\u00c2\u00a0 But you can have all these things and still flop, if they don&#8217;t cohere.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0The coherence comes through &#8216;matching&#8217; as I understand it.\u00c2\u00a0 The power of the cinema is the ability to convey the same emotion through several coextant forms of art, making a greater art.\u00c2\u00a0 The actor, the camera, the dialog, the music- when they all come together, cinema happens.\u00c2\u00a0 Like a good band, they will each have their solos, while the other parts step back for a moment and provide the rhythm section.\u00c2\u00a0 But the overall effect is bigger than the parts.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0Maybe that&#8217;s obvious, reading over it.\u00c2\u00a0 But the matching, that&#8217;s what I wanted to point out.\u00c2\u00a0 There are so many forms of art happening, and they are each carrying the same narrative, the same film.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My theory of matching as the basic art of cinema (I don&#8217;t know a damn thing about the art of cinema): \u00c2\u00a0So, to make a movie you need lots of people.\u00c2\u00a0 Hence, we watch credits for a really long time.\u00c2\u00a0 &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elsweb.org\/tyler\/2007\/03\/02\/14\/\">Continue reading <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":19,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-14","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.elsweb.org\/tyler\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/14","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.elsweb.org\/tyler\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.elsweb.org\/tyler\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.elsweb.org\/tyler\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/19"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.elsweb.org\/tyler\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=14"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.elsweb.org\/tyler\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/14\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.elsweb.org\/tyler\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=14"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.elsweb.org\/tyler\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=14"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.elsweb.org\/tyler\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=14"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
