{"id":6,"date":"2007-01-27T15:04:59","date_gmt":"2007-01-27T22:04:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elsweb.org\/robyn\/2007\/01\/27\/lets-point-out-the-obvious\/"},"modified":"2007-01-27T15:04:59","modified_gmt":"2007-01-27T22:04:59","slug":"lets-point-out-the-obvious","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elsweb.org\/robyn\/2007\/01\/27\/lets-point-out-the-obvious\/","title":{"rendered":"Let&#8217;s point out the obvious."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I just thought I&#8217;d take a moment to say that yes, in fact, the movie The Glass Key is DIFFERENT than the book.\u00c2\u00a0 It was directed by Stuart Heisler; not written by Dashiell Hammett.\u00c2\u00a0 I think that we can talk about the multitude of differences between the book and the movie, as two entirely unique mediums of art, or we can talk about the quality of the movie as exactly what it is; a movie.\u00c2\u00a0 Yes, it does not have the refined character development of a novel.\u00c2\u00a0 I seem to recall that the defining characteristic of a novel is character development, while movies are known for entertainment.<\/p>\n<p>The movie The Glass Key is a completely different creature altogether.\u00c2\u00a0 It wasn&#8217;t made as a tribute to the book&#8211;it&#8217;s just loosely based on the book.\u00c2\u00a0 The movie has entirely different objectives at stake.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Such as money.\u00c2\u00a0 Hollywood is about the box office.<\/p>\n<p>That is not to say that all films are just about money&#8211;films are artistic creations in themselves.\u00c2\u00a0 But it&#8217;s a totally different form of art than a book.\u00c2\u00a0 Movies have other concerns; scene shots, costumes, lighting, acting, momentum, etc.\u00c2\u00a0 I think it&#8217;s unfair to compare\u00c2\u00a0a movie to a book without taking into account that it will not have the same effect that a book will have on it&#8217;s audience.\u00c2\u00a0 We&#8217;ll never enjoy any movies that are based on books (and there are quite a few) if we point out it&#8217;s failure to do justice to the book.\u00c2\u00a0 What about it&#8217;s success as a movie?\u00c2\u00a0 And it&#8217;s not just books&#8211;movies are often based on historical events, or true stories.\u00c2\u00a0 Well yes, sometimes movies are historically inaccurate.\u00c2\u00a0 Sometimes they don&#8217;t get the facts straight.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t think that it&#8217;s their responsibility to do so.\u00c2\u00a0 Yes, in the Sound of Music Maria and the children probably didn&#8217;t glamorously climb over the mountain to escape the Natzis.\u00c2\u00a0 It may have been more complicated than that.\u00c2\u00a0 But damn, that&#8217;s one of the most memorable scenes in any movie.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s a great shot.\u00c2\u00a0 And you can appreciate it for that.\u00c2\u00a0 Just like we can appreciate the movie The Glass Key as a MOVIE, and evaluate it&#8217;s strenghts and weaknesses as a work of film rather than as a book.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I just thought I&#8217;d take a moment to say that yes, in fact, the movie The Glass Key is DIFFERENT than the book.\u00c2\u00a0 It was directed by Stuart Heisler; not written by Dashiell Hammett.\u00c2\u00a0 I think that we can talk about the multitude of differences between the book and the movie, as two entirely unique [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":20,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-6","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.elsweb.org\/robyn\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/6","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.elsweb.org\/robyn\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.elsweb.org\/robyn\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.elsweb.org\/robyn\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/20"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.elsweb.org\/robyn\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=6"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.elsweb.org\/robyn\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/6\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.elsweb.org\/robyn\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=6"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.elsweb.org\/robyn\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=6"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.elsweb.org\/robyn\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=6"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
