{"id":85,"date":"2008-10-21T09:36:09","date_gmt":"2008-10-21T13:36:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elsweb.org\/nsftmfx\/?p=85"},"modified":"2008-10-21T09:36:09","modified_gmt":"2008-10-21T13:36:09","slug":"psalms-745","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elsweb.org\/nsftmfx\/2008\/10\/21\/psalms-745\/","title":{"rendered":"Psalms 74:5"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>It seems as if one had lifted up<br \/>\n<\/em><em>His axe in a forest of trees. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>My dear friend Katie Jabro <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mindhacks.com\/blog\/2008\/10\/banjo_brain_surgery.html\" target=\"_blank\">shared this with me<\/a>, &amp; because I do not know a lot about technological scienctific procedures, the biology of it confounds me to no end.\u00c2\u00a0 All I know is that this man is undergoing brain surgery WHILE playing the banjo &#8212; I believe how it works is this: surgeons tweak different sensory areas in one&#8217;s brain in order to determine the best spot for &#8220;deep brain stimulation,&#8221; a way to treat essential tremor (which is not Parkinson&#8217;s, &amp; is in fact much more dangerous and severe).\u00c2\u00a0 Thus, in order to find which pulses in the brain are best suited for this &#8220;stimulation,&#8221; the surgeons require the patient to stay awake during the surgery and do something requiring their motor skills so that they can tell when the motor skills themselves have been affected.<\/p>\n<p>This man is a world-class banjo player, &amp; thus the only logical activity for him to be doing during surgery (OPEN HEAD SURGERY, mind you!) is to play the banjo.\u00c2\u00a0 I am amazed by this technology, comforted by its accuracy, terrified by its implications.\u00c2\u00a0 Is this or is this not the coolest video you are likely to see for a very long time??<\/p>\n<p>Link &#8212;-&gt; <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/science\/nature\/7665747.stm\" target=\"_blank\">Man Plays Banjo During Brain Surgery<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It seems as if one had lifted up His axe in a forest of trees.
