This comes, as we all remember, directly before Sanjuro seems to loose control over the game he\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s playing and is beat up and nearly killed by Ushitora\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s men. <\/p>\n<p>So first,<br \/>\n<ins datetime=\"2007-02-02T14:02:18+00:00\"><\/ins><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.elsweb.org\/marycarolyn\/files\/2007\/02\/pdvd_075.JPG\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\nSanjuro is shown at the top of the frame in a full shot.<\/p>\n<p>Then,<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.elsweb.org\/marycarolyn\/files\/2007\/02\/pdvd_076.JPG\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\nhe moves to the middle of the frame.<\/p>\n<p>Sanjuro stays in the middle of the frame for a bit longer,<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.elsweb.org\/marycarolyn\/files\/2007\/02\/pdvd_079.JPG\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>until finally,<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.elsweb.org\/marycarolyn\/files\/2007\/02\/pdvd_080.JPG\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\nhis back is to us and he is at the very bottom of the frame.<br \/>\nTraditionally in film, characters at the bottom of a frame are powerless or vulnerable. Kurosawa ends this scene with Sanjuro at the bottome of the frame, showing the viewer that Sanjuro&#8217;s actions will lead to his subjugation to Ushitora, if only for a little while. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I wanted to talk a little bit about what Kurosawa is doing with framing in Yojimbo, particularly in the scene where Sanjuro has killed the six men protecting Nui and is destroying the house.
