{"id":21,"date":"2007-04-17T21:24:39","date_gmt":"2007-04-18T04:24:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elsweb.org\/itsthepunisher\/2007\/04\/17\/whats-wrong-with-landscapes\/"},"modified":"2007-04-17T21:24:39","modified_gmt":"2007-04-18T04:24:39","slug":"whats-wrong-with-landscapes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elsweb.org\/itsthepunisher\/2007\/04\/17\/whats-wrong-with-landscapes\/","title":{"rendered":"What&#8217;s Wrong With Landscapes?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Eben seems to have a comfort zone when it comes to landscapes.\u00c2\u00a0 They are &#8220;safe.&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0 A landscape can&#8217;t look at the picture you painted and say, &#8220;I look like <em>that?<\/em>&#8220;\u00c2\u00a0 Is there life in a landscape?\u00c2\u00a0 As a photographer\/filmmaker, I think there is.\u00c2\u00a0 A landscape is easy to compose because not much is moving in it.\u00c2\u00a0 The &#8220;face&#8221; of a landscape doesn&#8217;t really change either.\u00c2\u00a0 Looking at a landscape allows the viewer and even the artist to escape the reality around them.\u00c2\u00a0 They&#8217;re looking at a world inside another world.\u00c2\u00a0 You can see parts of the world you normally wouldn&#8217;t see.\u00c2\u00a0 I think that&#8217;s why Eben paints them so much.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s what he sees everyday and he tries to control it by painting it.\u00c2\u00a0 He could make the sky green if he wanted to.<\/p>\n<p>When you photograph or more especially paint a landscape, you have to take a step back and really concentrate.\u00c2\u00a0 Otherwise you get a horrible photo or painting.\u00c2\u00a0 But sometimes you need to take a horrible photo.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s a different perspective.\u00c2\u00a0 I think that is Eben&#8217;s problem.\u00c2\u00a0 He said in the book he had problems painting what he saw.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s hard to photograph what you see inside your head.\u00c2\u00a0 What he was doing was the same old thing: pictures of new buildings and bridges.\u00c2\u00a0 Once Jennie comes along, he gets inspired to paint something new, something fresh.\u00c2\u00a0 But he didn&#8217;t do it for the money.\u00c2\u00a0 He did the sketch to remember her face and be able to look at something real rather than just his thoughts.\u00c2\u00a0 Jennie is part of the past and present.\u00c2\u00a0 Her portrait meant so much to him.\u00c2\u00a0 So much that he didn&#8217;t even think of selling it until the dealer brought it up.\u00c2\u00a0 Of course he did not refuse because he needed the money.\u00c2\u00a0 Her existence is helping feed that hunger Eben described in the beginning of the novel.<\/p>\n<p>Landscapes are important works of art, but you can&#8217;t get the connection to it you can with portraits.\u00c2\u00a0 Remembering a person is more meaningful than a building.\u00c2\u00a0 Granted, Ansel Adams has done some amazing things.\u00c2\u00a0 If you aren&#8217;t familiar with his work I highly recommend looking him up.\u00c2\u00a0 But there&#8217;s something even more appealing in WeeGee&#8217;s photographs.\u00c2\u00a0 He photographed a lot of crime scenes in New York and other cities.\u00c2\u00a0 I also recommend looking him up but his work can be graphic.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Eben seems to have a comfort zone when it comes to landscapes.\u00c2\u00a0 They are &#8220;safe.&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0 A landscape can&#8217;t look at the picture you painted and say, &#8220;I look like that?&#8220;\u00c2\u00a0 Is there life in a landscape?\u00c2\u00a0 As a photographer\/filmmaker, I &hellip;
