{"id":34,"date":"2007-05-29T15:23:50","date_gmt":"2007-05-29T21:23:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elsweb.org\/disciplinepunish\/2007\/05\/29\/pillars-of-salt-2\/"},"modified":"2007-05-30T16:38:12","modified_gmt":"2007-05-30T22:38:12","slug":"pillars-of-salt-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elsweb.org\/disciplinepunish\/pillars-of-salt-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Pillars of Salt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Infallible:<span>  <\/span>immune from error because of ties to the church or God<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">According to the introduction to Pillars of Salt, the Christian state was comfortable playing the role of God and revoking life. <span> <\/span>Those responsible for Morgan\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s death described it not as an execution but as his life being \u00e2\u20ac\u0153turn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d off\u00e2\u20ac\u009d by God.<span>  <\/span>The primarily Catholic idea of infallibility must have transferred over to New England, which did not have a large Catholic population.<span>  <\/span>Petty and relatable crimes, like \u00e2\u20ac\u0153lying, cursing, or Sabbath-breaking\u00e2\u20ac\u009d were emphasized to scare people into following the infallible will of the church and state.<span>  <\/span>The condemned were not allowed to convey their own messages and instead were \u00e2\u20ac\u0153manipulated\u00e2\u20ac\u009d to convey a message not only of fear of God, but also of hope.<span>  <\/span>Some men considered themselves \u00e2\u20ac\u0153agents of God\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s authority\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and any actions they took were distorted to show that the morals of the church were right.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Performance:<span>  <\/span>a dramatic representation of events<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Performances were important to the change in punishment in America.<span>  <\/span>Authorities pressured the condemned into performing rituals of penitence.<span>  <\/span>Criminals also gained sympathy through performance.<span>  <\/span>Packer attested his innocence and used the publicity of his death to shape his identity as a caring doctor and scientist rather than a criminal. <span> <\/span>Ames was accepted by the people because of his \u00e2\u20ac\u0153credible family\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and outward gentility, despite his clear criminal behavior.<span>  <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Hierarchy:<span>  <\/span>a system of ranking and order<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Although criminals could express themselves through crime narratives, they could not escape American hierarchy and had to remain within this hierarchy in their texts. <span> <\/span>People would not accept someone who defied societal rules too much.<span>  <\/span>Mountain never escapes the hierarchical system, even after escaping from the ship on which he served.<span>  <\/span>His race was considered very important by the public.<span>  <\/span>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Refusing to accept either his base social position or the baseness of his racial character, Mountain defied the standard conceptions that shaped the lives of those who read his narrative. <span> <\/span>Yet, as readers knew all too well, it was a safe defiance; given the requirements of the genre, they knew where, when, and how his defiance would end.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Infallible: immune from error because of ties to the church or God &nbsp; According to the introduction to Pillars of Salt, the Christian state was comfortable playing the role of God and revoking life.
