{"id":108,"date":"2007-06-11T13:58:19","date_gmt":"2007-06-11T19:58:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elsweb.org\/disciplinepunish\/2007\/06\/11\/powers-2\/"},"modified":"2007-06-11T13:59:08","modified_gmt":"2007-06-11T19:59:08","slug":"powers-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elsweb.org\/disciplinepunish\/powers-2\/","title":{"rendered":"powers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Sin- Powers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 narrative is extremely concerned with sin.<span>  <\/span>He explains that a woman when he is young teaches him \u00e2\u20ac\u0153that awful sin\u00e2\u20ac\u009d (343).<span>  <\/span>The rest of his narrative is largely concerned with sexual crimes, and we see how he blames his later crimes on the woman who first taught him the awful sin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Escape- Powers manages to escape from jail while awaiting execution, and even says at the conclusion of his narrative that the thought of escape eases his mind off of his execution.<span>  <\/span>After the end of the story, we learn that Powers does in fact escape.<span>  <\/span>This is very much unlike the other narratives we have read in which the criminals accept their fate and are not only willing, but somewhat excited to die.<span>  <\/span>Powers attempts (and successes) in escaping show his unwillingness to accept his fate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]--><\/p>\n<p><span>Intention-<span>  <\/span>Powers states that he overtook a young woman \u00e2\u20ac\u0153without any evil intentions,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d but after raping her says that he \u00e2\u20ac\u0153succeeded in my hellish design\u00e2\u20ac\u009d (344).<span>  <\/span>Powers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 narrative seems to be full of not evil intentions, but mere opportunity: \u00e2\u20ac\u0153for when I saw the opportunity, the devil, or some other evil spirit, gave me the inclination\u00e2\u20ac\u009d (334).  <span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sin- Powers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 narrative is extremely concerned with sin.
