“Yojimbo reeks of cheesy, machismo in a way that suggests that men are just all brawn.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Kurasawa must have gone out and killed lots of big game and then shined his sword (phallus) afterward.\u00c2\u00a0 The film gushes with archetypes of virility such as weapons, killing and and boozing.\u00c2\u00a0 In fact, these things define Yojimbo (can’t remember his name) as they did Ed\/Ned in “The Glass Key.”\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0I’m not advocating killing and violence as ways to pass\u00c2\u00a0one’s time, however a little drinking and skirt-chasing\u00c2\u00a0are generally viewed as\u00c2\u00a0harmless\u00c2\u00a0male past times.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0“Yojimbo” and “The Glass Key” successfully re-enforce these attitudes.\u00c2\u00a0 I think it is remarkable that they were made on two different continents, portraying two completely different cultures, and yet their main characters could have shared an embryonic sac.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n
Environment plays an important role in both movies.\u00c2\u00a0 In “Key” the indoor environment figures prominently, i.e. the sometimes lavish furnishings and decor.\u00c2\u00a0 In “Yojimbo” the environment is the actual physical landscape.\u00c2\u00a0 It reminds me of a Clint Eastwood western.\u00c2\u00a0 Though I digress.\u00c2\u00a0 The desolate, windy, sandy town portrays an atomosphere of doom.\u00c2\u00a0 It leaves the people who inhabit it with nothing.\u00c2\u00a0 At any moment I expected to see a giant tumbleweed blow across the screen and carry away one of the geishas.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0As lavish as the environs of the “Key” were, so\u00c2\u00a0was the rusticity of\u00c2\u00a0“Yojimbo.”\u00c2\u00a0 Yet, despite their\u00c2\u00a0obvious differences, the two films\u00c2\u00a0proved that\u00c2\u00a0boys\u00c2\u00a0will be boys.\u00c2\u00a0 Ed\/Ned may be the coolest, suavest dude he could have been, while\u00c2\u00a0Yojimbo was definitely a male bimbo.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
