Does this mean the "life of the mind" is somehow equated with hell? Is the artisit in this sense a tortured figure? I always thought that the Coen brothers were poking fun at the idea of the tortured artist which is very much a Modernist conceit. Barton Fink's self-consumption with his own woes, namely his writer's block and pre-conceptions of his genius as averse to that of Hollywood, leads to his inability to listen to Charlie's stories, which are very much the poetry of this movie. The working man is the poet, and his hell is of a different order in many ways. That said, the greatest element of this film in my mind are the two detectives who interview Fink in the Hotel lobby, just great dialogiew and an unbelievably witty scene unparalleled in any other Coen brother movie save The Big Lebowski. A great post about a great film.
