I just love the imagery of learning as running. As Gardner points out the track and the open terrain ought to be synergistic. There is a time for the set goals and a time to get a little lost and maybe get a few bumps and bruises along the way.
Like you I need both the track and the open terrain. Of course this doesn't make either side of the argument happy. Thats why the people in the middle need to start speaking up or better yet leading by example.
Lets keep running.

Would the free running be totally laissez-faire or would you propose some guidelines? If the former, how would you help insure that the student ended up with a coherent curriculum, rather than a random set of unrelated courses.

A great post that recognizes the role of ambition, and commitment to ambition, in all education. Ambition for what? For fulfilling one's potential, which means (as you say) both running a course and charting a course. The two activities can be and ought to be synergistic.
